Overview
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention is a non-surgical procedure that opens blocked or narrowed coronary arteries using a thin, flexible tube called a catheter. The treatment involves inserting a small balloon and often a stent (metal scaffold) to widen the artery and restore normal blood flow to the heart muscle.
PCI is typically performed when coronary artery disease has caused significant narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to your heart. The procedure may be recommended as a planned treatment following diagnostic tests, a follow-on procedure after an angiogram, or it may be performed as an emergency intervention during or after a heart attack.
