Overview
TAVI is a catheter-based procedure that involves inserting a new aortic valve through a small incision, typically in the groin. The treatment addresses severe aortic stenosis, a condition where the aortic valve becomes narrowed and restricts blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body, or severe aortic regurgitation, where the aortic valve becomes significantly leaky
Unlike traditional open-heart surgery, TAVI is performed through minimally invasive techniques, making it suitable for patients who may not be candidates for conventional valve replacement surgery. The procedure involves carefully positioning a replacement valve within the existing diseased valve using advanced imaging guidance.
Key Points:
Catheter-based valve replacement
Minimally invasive approach
No open-heart surgery required
Advanced imaging guidance
